EPFO: Generate Life Certificate Or Jeevan Praman Patra Online

Pensioners who get their due pension through Pension Disbursing Authorities (PDAs) such as the bank or the post offices are required to furnish a ‘life certificate’ or Jeevan Praman Patra’ to these PDAs once every year. This life certificate is submitted either by presenting themselves personally or by delivering a life certificate in the prescribed format. EPFO guarantees a minimum pension of Rs 1,000 to pensioners. Employees Provident Fund subscribers who have contributed to the fund for at least 10 years are eligible for pension.

In view of the Covid-19 pandemic and considering the vulnerability of senior citizens, the government has extended the existing time-line for submission of life certificate. This year, all central government pensioners have been allowed to submit life certificate from 1st November 2020 till 31st December 2020. However, the pensioners in the age group of 80 years and above, can submit life certificate from 1st October 2020 onwards, to 31st December 2020.

In February this year, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) stated that pensioners would be able to submit life certificate online at their convenience during any time of the year. The life certificate will remain valid for one year from the date of its submission. This is yet to be completely implemented yet.

Earlier, the process of generation and submission of life certificates used to begin from 1st November while 30th November was fixed as the last date to complete the process. Those who failed to complete it in November had their pension disbursal stopped from January. However, now pensioners will be able to submit their life certificate anytime of the year without waiting for November. Once submitted, the certificate will remain valid for the next 12 months.

The ‘life certificate’ can also be generated online. Instead of submitting a life certificate physically after getting it attested by a bank manager or a gazetted officer, one can also submit a digital life certificate at any EPFO office, pension disbursing bank, UMANG app or common service centre.

Pensioners can generate a digital life certificate using a software application and secure Aadhaar-based biometric authentication system. The digital life certificate (DLC), which is generated is stored online and can be accessed by the pensioner and the PDA whenever required by them.

Here are the requirements for generating a ‘digital life certificate’:

1) The pensioner must have an Aadhaar number.

2) The pensioner needs to have an operational mobile number.

For the generation of the digital life certificate, pensioners need to first register with the ‘Jeevan Pramaan’ app.
