A major fire broke out at a chemical company in Kurkumbh MIDC in Daund taluka of Pune district on Friday morning. No one was injured in the incident, an official said.

On receiving information, Devendra Potphode, chief fire officer of Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), said, several fire tenders were rushed to the spot at Kusmum Distillation and Refining Private Limited Company to douse the flames.

“The blaze erupted around 10.30 am. Water tankers were rushed to the site and the fire was doused. Cooling operation is underway now,” an official was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

The incident came to light after a huge sound was heard in the area. Flames and smoke, which were seen billowing from the office premises, triggered a panic-like situation in the area for a while.

The official said that drums containing acetone and ethanol were kept at the plant.

“As the fire spread, those drums caught fire and exploded. A blanket of thick black smoke engulfed the area after the blaze. Nobody was injured in the incident as the plant was shut,” he said.

The cops have sealed the area and have barricaded certain locations to avoid crowding.

Taking to Twitter, Baramati MP Supriya Sule said: “Kusum Chemicals in Kurkumbh MIDC is on fire.I spoke with Shri. Naval Kishore Ram-Pune District Collector. The administration has started the relief work.I am monitoring the situation and coordinating relief measures along with the administration. I urge all the citizens not to panic.”
