With this step of the central government, lawyers, doctors, CA and other self-employed people will also be able to join the EPF scheme. Currently, around 60 million people are covered under the EPF.

The Employees Provident Fund, which is considered an important social security scheme for employees, can now be implemented at the individual level as well. In fact, the government also wants to open this scheme for self employed people and self-employed people. A top official told Economic Times that this decision will help 90% workers who are currently outside the purview of the scheme. At present, only employees of such organizations are covered under the EPF scheme, which has at least 20 or more employees. With this move, lawyers, doctors, CA and other self-employed people will also be able to join the EPF scheme. Currently, around 60 million people are covered under the EPF.

The idea is to make EPFO person-centric rather than institution-centric and a proposal has been sent to the government in this regard. The official said the proposal would be considered after the Social Security Code bill was approved by Parliament. The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha at the end of last year. Explain that the government is considering merging the social security code by merging 8 central labor laws. But facilitating the involvement of EPFO in person will prove to be an important step and this will increase the scope of social security scheme. The government official said that social security is still a big issue for self-employed people and bringing them under the ambit of EPFO will solve this problem.
